How to count keys on a keyboard

Counting the keys on your keyboard can help you figure out which type of keyboard you have, or how many keys it has if you plan to buy a different keyboard. There are several methods for counting how many keys are on your computer's keyboard, depending on your use-case.

1. Count Only the Visible Keys: To count only the keys that are plainly visible, look at each rectangular shape and count it as one key. Don't bother counting the additional function keys (like volume up or down) that may be located near or below the number keys; they don't add to the total tally.

2. Count Every Key and Keycap: For a complete picture of how many buttons are on your keyboard, you'll need to count every key that is present, as well as any separate keycaps (small plastic pieces) that may join them together. Overall, a standard full-sized keyboard should have around 104 total buttons and keycaps combined, including 10 function and 12 cursor control/navigation keys. On some keyboards these will be labeled differently (example: Home, End, PgUp/PgDn).

3. Check the Manufacturer Website: The quickest way to get an exact count of all your keyboard's features is to check out what it says on the manufacturer's website. This will let you know how many separate physical keys and/or keycaps it has—as well as any other unique switches like roller knobs or media control pads—all without having to take apart your keyboard or perform any measurements or calculations yourself!
